Maternity Pay (SGK Allowance) Conditions in Turkey: The 90-Day Premium Rule
Maternity pay is the temporary incapacity allowance SGK pays in case of maternity. You must meet some conditions. This guide covers the conditions and the rules that affect the calculation.
Conditions
- Being insured under 4/a (SSK).
- At least 90 days of short-term insurance premiums reported in the year before birth.
- Not working during the leave.
How are daily earnings found?
Under the change to Social Insurance Law No. 5510, daily earnings are found by dividing the insured earnings reported to SGK in the 12 months before incapacity began by the premium days of that period. Some sites still describe the old “last 3 months” method; use the current method.
How much is the allowance?
In case of maternity the allowance is two thirds of daily earnings (for rest outside hospital). For days spent in hospital the rate is halved. The allowance cannot exceed daily net earnings.
If fewer than 180 days of premiums were reported
If fewer than 180 days of short-term insurance premiums were reported in the last year, daily earnings used for the allowance cannot exceed twice the daily lower limit (the minimum wage).
For how many days is it paid?
Because leave rose to 24 weeks, the allowance is calculated for 168 days (182 for multiple pregnancy). See how many days is maternity leave.
Example
An employee with 480,000 TL gross earnings over 12 months and 360 premium days has daily earnings of 1,333.33 TL, a daily allowance of 888.89 TL and a total of about 149,333.33 TL for 168 days. Try your own numbers with the maternity pay calculator.
Civil servants keep receiving their salary during leave, so they do not receive maternity pay.
